Deaf Awareness Week 2026: Breaking Barriers Through Better Communication
From all of us at Local Homecare, we are proud to support Deaf Awareness Week 2026, taking place from 4th–10th May across the UK. This year’s theme, “Right to Understand – Together, We Break Barriers,” highlights the importance of accessible communication and inclusion for deaf and hard of hearing people in every part of daily life.
At Local Homecare, we believe everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, respected, and included — especially when receiving care in their own home.
Why Deaf Awareness Week Matters
More than 18 million adults in the UK are deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing, and many still face communication barriers when accessing healthcare, social care, and community support.
Simple everyday situations can become challenging when communication needs are not properly understood. Missed appointments, difficulty understanding medication instructions, feelings of isolation, or struggling to communicate with carers can all have a significant impact on wellbeing and independence.
Deaf Awareness Week is an opportunity for organisations, communities, and individuals to learn more about deaf awareness, improve accessibility, and celebrate Deaf culture and British Sign Language (BSL).
Supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing Clients at Home
Homecare is about far more than practical support — it is about building trust, confidence, and meaningful relationships.
At Local Homecare, we understand that communication is a vital part of quality care. Our carers are encouraged to use clear communication techniques and adapt their approach to meet each individual’s needs.
This can include:
Facing clients clearly when speaking
Reducing background noise during conversations
Speaking naturally and clearly without shouting
Using written notes where helpful
Learning basic BSL signs
Allowing extra time for communication
Understanding the importance of hearing aids and assistive technology
Small changes can make a huge difference in helping people feel comfortable, respected, and independent.
The Importance of Inclusion in Care
Many deaf people experience social isolation, particularly older adults living alone. A friendly visit, a patient conversation, and inclusive communication can have a powerful impact on emotional wellbeing.
As a local homecare provider, we are committed to creating an environment where every client feels valued and included, regardless of their hearing ability.
We also recognise the importance of continuing education for care staff so that we can better understand the experiences and needs of the Deaf community.
How Everyone Can Get Involved
Deaf Awareness Week is not just for healthcare organisations — everyone can play a part in making society more inclusive.
Here are a few simple ways to get involved:
Learn a few basic BSL phrases
Use subtitles on television and online videos
Be patient and attentive during conversations
Support deaf-led organisations and charities
Raise awareness on social media
Encourage accessibility in workplaces and public spaces
Even small actions help break down barriers.
Working Together for a More Inclusive Future
This Deaf Awareness Week, Local Homecare is proud to stand alongside the Deaf community in promoting understanding, accessibility, and inclusion.
By improving awareness and communication, we can help create a society where everyone has the right to understand and be understood.
