Staying Safe During the UK Heatwave

With temperatures across the UK expected to exceed 30°C and Amber and Red Heat Health Alerts in place, it's important that we all take extra precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme heat.

In Domicilliary Care, the health and wellbeing of both our clients and care professionals is our top priority. Many of the people we support are more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather, making it essential that we remain vigilant during every visit.

Our care teams should encourage clients to drink plenty of fluids, wear light and comfortable clothing, and keep their homes as cool as possible by closing curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day. It's also important to look out for signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headaches, confusion, tiredness or reduced urine output, and report any concerns promptly.

Care professionals should also remember to look after themselves by staying hydrated throughout the day, wearing sunscreen when travelling between visits, and taking every opportunity to cool down where possible.

By taking these simple steps, we can continue to provide safe, high-quality care while helping both our clients and colleagues stay healthy and comfortable throughout the heatwave. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and look out for one another.
